Hey everyone! Happy September! I am coming to you from my house as the MLB postseason push for both New York teams takes shape. Coming into today’s action, both the Yankees and the Mets are looking to further lengthen their lead in their respective divisions.
As of today, the Yankees stand at 79-54 while the Tampa Bay Rays are 74-57, 4 games behind the Yankees. The Yankees lost the first 2 games of their 3 game set with the Rays, meaning the winner of this division is far from determined, despite a tremendous start to the Yankees’ season. Aaron Judge is having a historic season. With 53 home runs, he is on pace to break Roger Maris’s American League home run record (61 home runs in 1961). I hope Judge breaks Maris’s home run record. Unfortunately for Yankee fans, Judge will be an unrestricted free agent at the end of this season and 32 other teams will be bidding for his services. Judge turned down a contract extension rumored to be worth 213.5 million over 7 years or 30.4 million annually. He has proven to be worth that kind of money. There are rumors swirling that he may return to the Bay Area where he grew up.
Across town, the Mets are having a magical season of their own. With the return of Jacob deGrom and the signing of Max Scherzer to a 3 year, 130 million contract plus the resurgence of Edwin Diaz at the backend of the bullpen, the Mets stand at 85-49…and they look unstoppable. But don’t count out the defending World Series champs, the Atlanta Braves, who are just 2 games out of first place. Hopefully the Mets and the Polar Bear can hold off the defending champions.
